Bakewell Farmers Markets – Saturdays 9am – 2pm

Get there early, as stalls sell out due to popular demand!

Visitors and locals alike, are to be found mingling together around the 70 + stalls packed with superb local produce and crafts at Bakewell Farmers Markets.

Being one of the larger towns with in the peak district Bakewell is always a bustling hub of activity. The Farmers Markets are some of the best in the whole country. If you want to attend one of these vibrant markets they are generally held on the last Saturday of every month.

According to Derbyshire Dales District Council, The Bakewell Farmers’ Market now regularly attracts more than 5,000 visitors and it’s common to find that the stall holders often sell out before closing time .  The Derbyshire Times also reported that the Farmers Markets are so popular that there is a waiting list of more than 50 traders.

If you want to visit Bakewell farmers Market, they are held at the District Council’s Agricultural Business Centre (ABC). What’s more Endmoor Farm Holiday Cottages are situated just a few miles away in nearby Monyash.

“The ABC is now not only widely recognised as home to one of the UK’s top five livestock markets – it has the second largest farmers’ market in the country, with only Winchester boasting a larger number of stall holders.”

It is widely reported that the lure of the Farmers markets is also having a very positive effect on local business.With local cafe’s and pubs having to employ extra staff on Market days. The Farmers’ Market is dedicated to encouraging sustainable environmental practice, so most stallholders come from within a 30 mile radius of Bakewell, though some speciality producers trading in foods such as smoked mackerel are allowed to attend from up to 100 miles away.

The Majority of the stalls are dedicated to food and drink, with old favourites like real ales, wines, mushrooms, vegetable stalls, rare breeders selling  pork, buffalo meat.  There are ice cream, bread, jams and preserve traders to look out for too.  As if all this wasn’t enough, there is granola and locally milled flour, fresh trout and other fish, locally grown chilli products, Turkish food, sweet and savoury muffins, soups and goat’s meat.

Bakewell Farmers Markets – Times and Dates

Chatsworth House and Park is one of Derbyshire’s most iconic buildings, with its yellow stone and surrounding gardens it is hard for it not to take your breath away.

Sir William Cavendish and his wife first lived in the original house in the mid-16^th century.  After his passing many Dukes resided in Chatsworth house, with all constructing some architect or enriching the gardens. The house and gardens have remained little changed since this, the only change being the demolition of the great conservatory for a maze in replacement.

Chatsworth House has seen many famous people who come and stay and find the house and gardens magnificent. The surrounding park is an open space that is filled with greenery and woods that show the best possible views of the house. It is an excellent place for families to go on walks before visiting the farmyard that is behind the house. They have milking demonstrations and many other insights in to life on a farm. You can finish off having a warm drink whilst the children play on the Adventure playground.

Chatsworth House makes the most out of every occasion and this Easter is no different, From the 19^th March to 10^th April your children can take part in an Easter egg trail and hunt for all the decorated eggs, make sure you keep an eye out for the Easter Bunny…. Your children can search for golden eggs in the park and see all that spring has to offer before finally having their face painted and seeing all the newly hatched chicks and meeting all the baby lambs that have just been born in the farm yard.

Well Dressing, also once known as well flowering, is a custom practised in rural England, where people from mainly The Peak District of Derbyshire and Staffordshire come together and take part in the decoration of wells. Created from flower petals. The custom is thought to have originated in Tissington, Derbyshire in 1349 and was introduced during the period of the Black Death as a means to give thanks for the purity of water.

Everyone comes together in Derbyshire and colours their community in the form of Well Dressing. They celebrate everything from biblical scenes to special anniversaries. It is seen as an occasion for the people to celebrate their community and heritage. Well Dressings are creative but also educational. Families can learn what happened all those years ago in the form of art.

The Dressings usually begin in early May and last through until mid-September. Dates are being added daily to our Well Dressing calendar and we cannot wait to see the creations made this year. Our first Well Dressing this year starts on the 21^st May and ends the 29^th at Ashford in the Water in Bakewell, followed by Flash in Buxton starting on the 18^th June and ending on the 28^th.

There are many more dates in our Well Dressing calendar. The Well Dressing season ends in September so there is plenty of time for you and your family to come to Derbyshire, stay in a quaint countryside cottage at Endmoor Farm and learn the art that is Well Dressing.

Noted by The Guardian web site as one Britain’s best bike rides (View here) The Tissington Trail has recently undergone maintenance and upgrades to the paths ways making it even easier for all levels of walkers and cyclists. The nearby Tissington Trail follows the route of the last of the railways to be built in the Peak District in 1899.

Along the route there are various facilities in eluding car parking and picnic areas. It has great views with sections of the route being at over 1,000 in height but is still suitable for wheelchair users.
